Kathmandu is turning into a dirty city while undergoing through many urbanization programs. We find Plastics, piece of papers, parts of vegetables, metals, glass, dust from indoor cleaning almost everywhere in the community. The streets are dirty and we can see pile of garbage around the corners of every street. The dirt might create a health problem to the people living around. Government is unable to meet its responsibility in keeping the city clean. Lack of proper knowledge about the hazards of dirt among the community people is one of the challenges we are facing in Kathmandu now. After releasing the risk of unmanaged dirt in the community, Taramandal Mahila Sashaktikaran Abhiyan step forward to make local people aware about the health hazard they might face in near future.
With the help of local volunteers and citizens we make a decision to clean the streets of old Baneshwor. Than we buy few necessary tools like broom, gloves, masks and dustbins we announced the Community Cleaning Program. Early that morning people were gathered to work together for making the community clean. We than create several groups, served them with necessary tools and designated a specific group in a specific street and alleys.
Everyone was enthused to work as a community to clean their surroundings. the program run for 2 hours from 8am till 10pm. after completing the task everyone brought back their collected dirt in a specified location from where a garbage truck picks them all. At the end of the program we discussed about the hazards of unmanaged garbage and trashes with the community and the program ended. This kind of small work together can change a community and help people live in a pollution free world. Although we want to organize a large scale campaign for cleaning the city, we are limited with resources.
